Executive positions - Duties


1st Chair- First Line of Contact  
This position deals  with bringing information into the NSHEA, and guiding the board's decisions according to the mandate.
The 1st Chair will stay abreast of information from members and support groups through ongoing communication.  They will also attend the annual meeting with the Nova Scotia Department of Education, along with representatives from other provincial home educating groups, including HEMS.  Using this information, along with information from other executive members, the Chair will set the agenda for the executive meetings and will run the meetings, ensuring that the board follows their mandate.  

2nd Chair - Communication Liaison 
This position deals primarily with information being imparted by the NSHEA
The 2nd Chair, using information from members and executive will organize the contents of the newsletter, e-news and website. 
They will work with or oversee the newsletter editor, enews editor, and webmaster.

3rd Chair - Events co-ordinator 
This position deals primarily with the practical aspects of organizing a Family Day/ AGM event.
The 3rd Chair will co-ordinate the AGM according to the decisions made by the executive.  Tasks involve selecting a location for a Family Day/AGM, working with the venue staff (or organizing volunteers) and scheduling the day's events. The bulk of these tasks will be concentrated in the Spring of the year and will be facilitated by discussion at meetings.  If the NSHEA opts to have a fall Family Event, or any other major events, this person would facilitate these as well. 

Secretary 
This position deals with managing paperwork for the NSHEA.
The secretary takes minutes at the Executive Meetings and distributes them to the executive afterwards for review.  Other tasks include drafting letters or emails,and  filing and processing paperwork.  

Treasurer  
This position deals with the banking and membership records for the NSHEA.
The treasurer receives registration forms and money, and ensures that members have their information inputted to the current database (This is now done as a simple google docs entry similar to our Ross Creek registration form.)  the treasurer deposits dues, holds the chequebook,  and summarizes the year's money received and money spent prior to the AGM.    

All of the above Directors attend the Executive Meetings (4 or 5 per year,  each being 1-2 hours long) either in person, by skype or on speaker phone.  They report any issues or discoveries to the 1st Chair so that meeting agendas can be efficiently scheduled.  Incoming directors will also be provided with a directive package and will be put in touch with outgoing or past directors who have previously held your position.

All Directors have NSHEA membership dues waived for the year in which they hold office, and also have a Home School Legal Defense Association membership provided. The HSLDA offers our group event and director's insurance.
